1. Intro
Synder Filtration offers a wide selection of microfiltration (MF) membranes developed specifically to solve complex process challenges such as microbial removal, protein fractionation, and pretreatment to other membrane processes. Available in both spiral-wound and flat sheet configurations, microfiltration membranes and membrane systems can be customized to meet specific application goals with efficiency.
Overview
Microfiltration is a low pressure separation process utilizing membranes with very open pore structures. Microfiltration filters can be made with both organic materials, such as polymer based membranes, as well as inorganic materials, such as ceramic or stainless steel. In selecting the appropriate membrane, spiral-wound polymeric microfiltration filters are often the starting point for consideration, based on spiral MF’s balance of durability, membrane area per unit, and significantly lower membrane unit cost, and equipment capital cost vs. ceramic and stainless options.
MF Products
Microfiltration membranes have the most open pore sizes of all polymeric membranes. With a pore size range of 0.1 to 10μm, microfiltration membranes are capable of separating large suspended solids such as colloids, particulates, fat, and bacteria, while allowing sugars, proteins, salts, and low molecular weight molecules pass through the membrane. MF membranes feature an asymmetric pore structure, with tighter surface pores to control rejection, and more open macrovoids in the membrane cross section, in order to optimize flux.
Synder Filtration currently offers three types of polymeric microfiltration membrane filters, all of which maintain good resistance to pH, temperature, and fouling tendencies. They are also commonly used as a pretreatment step for feed stream applications. These PVDF microfiltration membrane filters are manufactured to sustain excellent chemical and heat resistance, and are available in both spiral-wound and flat sheet configurations, to provide more flexibility for customization around specific process applications.
Synder’s sanitary microfiltration membranes are also compliant with FDA standards listed in CFR Title 21, 3-A Sanitary Standards No. 45-02, as well as USDA sanitary standards and are fit for use in a variety of sanitary, as well as industrial applications across a broad spectrum of industries.
MF Applications
Microfiltration is a physical separation process that removes contaminants such as suspended solids, fats, and microbes from process fluids. Microfiltration may also be used in combination with other membrane technologies such as reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, and ultrafiltration. Common applications of Synder’s MF membrane technology include:

2. Microfiltration: Flat Sheet Membranes
Microfiltration membranes have a molecular weight cut-off range of 0.08 to 0.2µ. MF membranes have the ability to rejection large macromolecules, which are useful in the separation of fat and microbes throughout the dairy industry.
In certain high solids applications, flat sheet microfiltration membrane provide excellent performance and membrane life vs. operating cost. Unlike hollow fiber membranes, flat sheet membranes have a very strong support material in which the polymeric membrane layer is rooted to that greatly increases physical durability.
Synder Filtration offers a complete line of dry and wet microfiltration flat sheet membranes. With product sizes ranging from one square foot to tens of thousands of linear feet, Synder can supply flat sheet MF membranes for process research, pilot testing, spiral element winding, and for use in plate & frame membrane systems.
Membrane | Type | Material | Molecular Weight Cut-Off |
FR | MF | PVDF | 800 000 |
V0.1 | MF | PVDF | 0.1μ |
V0.2 | MF | PVDF | 0.2μ |
Synder holds a large inventory of flat sheet rolls in order to provide our customers with the fastest lead times possible.
3. Microfiltration: Spiral-Wound Elements
Microfiltration membranes are available in many different configurations, including hollow fiber, tubular, flat sheet, and spiral-wound. When pre filtration is economically viable via bag or cartridge filtration, spiral-wound microfiltration elements are often preferred because they offer a balanced combination of membrane area per module, physical durability, membrane life, and unit cost.
Synder Filtration currently offers three different types of membranes in spiral wound microfiltration elements, available in both sanitary and industrial grades. With a molecular weight cut-off between 0.08-0.2µm, PVDF 800 (FR) is the tightest of the three, with PVDF V0.1 being the intermediary, and PVDF V0.2 being the most open in the range.

4. Microfiltration Membrane Systems: Pilot & Full Scale
Microfiltration systems are typically designed for low pressure operation, which makes MF technology an environmentally friendly option for process separations.
Synder Filtration designs and fabricates a wide range of microfiltration systems, but we also help customers to develop processes through our unique application development program.
We start by collaborating with our customers to first understand their process goals, and then Synder’s development team prepares a comprehensive test plan, including feasibility and pilot scale testing. Synder offers an array of microfiltration pilot systems with a full range of capabilities. Some of NF pilot systems can be considered mini-production scale demonstration units.
NF-UF-202-2540-IND-SS-304
With the ability to design and fabricate control systems in-house, and durable SS304 or SS316 stainless steel construction, pilot tests can be fine tuned to the specific requirements of our customers. Pilot studies are conducted either at Synder’s Application Development Center in Vacaville, California, or on location at a customer’s chosen test facility.
Once the test results are collected, the engineering team engages to design the full scale membrane process solution. As a microfiltration systems manufacturer, Synder has the capability to fabricate, install, commission and support full-scale and multi-process (RO, NF, UF, & MF) membrane systems. In every step of the process, we aim to deliver timely, knowledge, friendly service, and ultimately, application profitability for our customers.
